Asymptomatic Carotid Stenosis: Medical Therapy Best Option

The review, published in the May 7 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine, was conducted by a group led by Gowri Raman, MD, MS, from Tufts Medical Center, Boston, Massachusetts. The discussion is published in Medscape medical news on 22 May 2013.

Opinion of Dr. Rahul Kulkarni:

Asymptomatic carotid artery disease is a controversial disease. I see many such patients. They are typically diagnosed during a ‘routine’ health check-up or while investigating for some other reason. They are always worried about the risk of future stroke.

Opinions vary regarding surgery or stenting (like coronay stent, put after angioplasty) vs. only medical treatment. Majority agree that best medical management is sufficient. The present study further proved this point.
